Our epoch amasses powers, and dreams itself rational. But no one recognizes these powers as their own. There is no access to real adulthood; only the possible transformation, one day, of this long anxiety in measured weariness. It's because no one stops being held in tutelage. The question isn't to prove that people live more or less poorly; but that they do so always in a manner that escapes them.
