To a Passing Woman
The deafening street around me brawled
Tall, slender, veiled, majestic sadness
A woman passed, with fastidious hand
Raising, balancing flounce and hem

Graceful and noble, with a leg like a statue's
Me, I drank in, frozen like a spastic
From her eye, livid heaven where storms are born
The softness that entrances and the pleasure that kills

Lightning -- then night Fugitive beauty
The sight of whom has me suddenly reborn
Will I ever see you again in all eternity?

Indeed, very far from here -- too late -- never perhaps
Since neither of us knows where the other will go
O you whom I could have loved O you who knew it
